Introduction
Cinnamon oil is extracted from the leaf and bark of the cinnamon plant, scientifically known as Cinnamomum zeylancium. The oil is extracted by steam distillation process from the leaves and inner barks of the tree. The oil yield from leaves stand at 1.6-1.8% and the barks generate 0.5-1 % oil. The oil extracted from leaves is more delicate. The leaf oil has chemical components like eugenol, cinnamic aldehyde, benzyl benzoate etc. The plant is a native of Indonesia, but it is also cultivated in Sri Lanka and India. The rust colored tree can achieve a height of up to 15 meters but it is kept within a reachable height when commercially used. The leaves are leathery green and shiny. The plant bears small, white flowers.
Uses of Cinnamon oil
Aromatherapy: The leaf oil is generally used in aromatherapy. It is a useful antidepressant and an antidote to general weakness.
Medicinal uses: The therapeutic uses of cinnamon oil include the use of its anti rheumatoid properties, and digestive properties. The oil is also used as an antidote to cold and flu. Other medicinal uses include aphrodisiac properties, antibiotic properties, cardiac and carminative properties. However, high dosages can cause convulsions and oil from the bark should be especially avoided during pregnancy.
Culinary properties: The oil is used to impart flavor and aroma to food, especially in baked food items. It is also used in non alcoholic beverages and cinnamon tea is also prepared.
Other uses: Cinnamon oil is also used as a room freshener. It is a highly effective mosquito repellant.
